Sound analysis of 'Eat, Pray, Love'
Sound
Description
Effect
Diegetic
People cheering from a foreign country.
The diegetic music mainly throughout the trailer goes
in sync with the voice over and often the music also.
The audience are aware that it’s a light hearted film,
it’s happy and evokes a positive reaction.
Non-diegetic
Begins with an upbeat tune of a guitar.
Slowly builds up to an upbeat song (Florence and the
machine).
The guitar again suggests the film is light hearted and
casual.
The use of the song is to slowly build up the tension
as the events unfold in the trailer.
Dialogue
There is a lot of dialogue used in the trailer e.g.
‘When some guy who yes looks like a little like Yodi hands you a prophecy,
you have to respond.’ The dialogue is mainly from the main round female character
but does show to be from the multiple other flat characters surrounding her.
It allows the audience to acknowledge the story line
and begin to piece together what is happening.
It also develops the opinion of the main female
character as it is evident she goes through a change.
Voice over
The voice over is mainly of the female character and
slightly of the Asian man at the beginning. The voice over also goes in sync
with the diegetic music also. Most of the dialogue is the female character
telling her story to the audience.
Similarly to the dialogue, the audience are becoming
more informed about the main character and her story she is telling.
Change in tempo, feeling or action
The sound really helps show the change in feeling as
the trailer begins with the sound of the guitar and swiftly changes to an
upbeat and well known song.
The audience are well aware that there is a shift in
the character as the music changes to the song. The song builds up a tension
to the point of the climax in the characters life and then is unravelled. The
music helps show the change in position for the character and how she
overcame her problems.
