Coming of age genre film poster analysis

Coming of age film poster analysis from millierana28

Through researching the different films, although my main intention was to recreate a film linked to the romance drama genre, I decided to divert into the coming of age genre. This is because I felt that my trailer was more fitting towards the genre and it is more related to do with the drama of my main female teenager who is on the verge of adulthood. There is a lack of the romance aspect which is the opposite of what is expected in the romance drama genre.

Poster analysis - The Light Between Oceans (2016)

The main reason I chose this poster to analyse is in similarity to the previous poster 'Blue is The Warmest Color.' Within the image itself, not a lot about the film is given away and I want to create enigma codes in my own poster so the audience can question what will happen. Moreover, I was also intrigued by the inter-titles shown as they are very simple but still stand out as they have altered the font sizes, putting emphasis on the key words. This is a common convention within the genre that the inter-titles are not over-exaggerated which then allows the main focus to be made on the image, this is something I wish to recreate. I do want the inter-titles to be seen and noticed but I want the images on the poster to show the suggestions of what the film could be about.

Poster analysis - Blue Is The Warmest Color (2013)

I decided to complete research on the poster of this film as I felt it was relative to my target audience and there is a slight similarity in the fact that both mine and the main character in the film are discovering something about themselves. The poster is very simplistic as are the majority within the genre therefore I wanted to recreate that in my own. I do not want my poster to be overly complicated or exaggerated as I am aware that will not attract my audience. With posters like this one, it suggests what the film is about and what could happen between the characters shown but nothing is exposed fully which is what engages the audience into watching the film. This is something I wish to take into my own poster, I want to intrigue the audience without overdoing what is being shown.

Film poster analysis - Eat, Pray, Love (2010)

This poster has inspired me in particular because of its location, they haven't unravelled a lot about the plot and so have created enigma codes on who this woman is. Another aspect that I like is the choice in location which again builds on the enigma codes but also suggests that she is not in a nearby area. I want to recreate a similar feel for my own poster that intrigues the audience but also has a choice of location that relates to the plot of my film.

Sound analysis - Eat, Pray, Love (2010)

Sound analysis of 'Eat, Pray, Love'

Sound
Description
Effect
Diegetic

People cheering from a foreign country.

The diegetic music mainly throughout the trailer goes in sync with the voice over and often the music also.
The audience are aware that it’s a light hearted film, it’s happy and evokes a positive reaction.
Non-diegetic
Begins with an upbeat tune of a guitar.

Slowly builds up to an upbeat song (Florence and the machine).
The guitar again suggests the film is light hearted and casual.

The use of the song is to slowly build up the tension as the events unfold in the trailer.
Dialogue
There is a lot of dialogue used in the trailer e.g. ‘When some guy who yes looks like a little like Yodi hands you a prophecy, you have to respond.’ The dialogue is mainly from the main round female character but does show to be from the multiple other flat characters surrounding her.
It allows the audience to acknowledge the story line and begin to piece together what is happening.

It also develops the opinion of the main female character as it is evident she goes through a change.
Voice over
The voice over is mainly of the female character and slightly of the Asian man at the beginning. The voice over also goes in sync with the diegetic music also. Most of the dialogue is the female character telling her story to the audience.
Similarly to the dialogue, the audience are becoming more informed about the main character and her story she is telling.
Change in tempo, feeling or action
The sound really helps show the change in feeling as the trailer begins with the sound of the guitar and swiftly changes to an upbeat and well known song.
The audience are well aware that there is a shift in the character as the music changes to the song. The song builds up a tension to the point of the climax in the characters life and then is unravelled. The music helps show the change in position for the character and how she overcame her problems.

Trailer update

Since beginning the coursework for the trailer, I had initially planned on creating a teen chic flick film and have started doing my research as shown in my last two posts on them. However, I have recently decided to change my genre of trailer as I began to map out ideas for it I realised my plans for the trailer would not be something teenagers could relate to. Although, I do aim to include aspects and have a young character to still show the element of the genre but the narrative of the trailer will not be typical to the teen genre at all. My new inspiration is now coming from the film 'Eat, Pray, Love' therefore any research from this point on will be based around the genre of drama and perhaps even romance.

Genre conventions

Powered by emaze

This was my first genre convention when I had originally planned on creating a film from the teen genre due to my target audience and the ideas I had for the plot. However, I decided to change my idea when I had been inspired by various other films from different genres. Overall, I am glad that I did switch my genres as I think if I had stuck with the genre, my film would be a lot more cliche than it is. I tried to subvert in certain aspects with the genre that I chose but had I have continued with this genre, I think I would have just followed the typical conventions in order to attract the audience.
